The Rules

Standard Sudoku rules apply: fill every row, column, and 3×3 box with the digits 1–9, each appearing exactly once.

Alphabet Sudoku (also called Word Sudoku or Letter Sudoku) uses a set of nine letters instead of digits 1–9. The rules are otherwise identical. Many Word Sudoku puzzles are designed so that a specific row, column, or diagonal spells out a word or name once solved. This makes the variant popular in newspapers and as a word-game crossover.

Letter-to-Number Mapping
Internally, A=1, B=2, …, I=9. If numbers are more comfortable, mentally map each letter to its digit while solving.

Common Questions

What is Alphabet Sudoku?

Alphabet Sudoku is a variant that uses the letters A through I instead of the digits 1 through 9. Every row, column, and 3×3 box must contain each of the nine letters exactly once. All standard Sudoku logic applies — only the symbols are different.

Is Alphabet Sudoku harder than regular Sudoku?

Not mathematically — the logic is identical. However, many players find letter-based puzzles slightly harder to scan visually because letters are less distinguishable at a glance than digits. Alphabetically-trained eyes may find patterns faster; digit-trained solvers may need a brief adjustment period.

What techniques work in Alphabet Sudoku?

Every standard Sudoku technique applies: naked singles, hidden singles, naked pairs, pointing pairs, X-Wings, and so on. You simply work with A–I instead of 1–9. Some players find it helpful to assign mental numeric values (A=1, B=2, ...) while learning the variant.

Can I use number-based Sudoku strategies?

Yes. There are no arithmetic clues in Alphabet Sudoku — no sums or inequalities — so all strategy is pure elimination logic, identical to classic Sudoku. The absence of any number-based mechanic means every technique transfers directly from classic Sudoku.

Is Alphabet Sudoku good for learning Sudoku?

It can be — removing the number associations forces you to think purely in terms of nine distinct symbols and their uniqueness constraints. Some educators use Alphabet Sudoku precisely because it eliminates any temptation to use arithmetic shortcuts.

How long does Alphabet Sudoku take to solve?

Easy puzzles take 5–15 minutes. Medium puzzles run 15–30 minutes. Hard puzzles average 30–60 minutes and expert puzzles can take 60–90 minutes. Solve times are very similar to classic Sudoku at equivalent difficulty levels.
