- A 16×16 grid has 256 cells, 16 rows, 16 columns, and 16 boxes (4×4 each)
- Symbols are typically 1–9 and A–G (16 distinct values)
- The rule is identical to 9×9: each symbol appears once per row, column, and box
- Solving techniques are the same — but the candidate sets are larger and patterns harder to see
- Allow 60–180 minutes for a first 16×16 at equivalent difficulty to a Hard 9×9
The Grid Structure
A 16×16 Sudoku has 16 rows, 16 columns, and 16 boxes arranged in a 4×4 pattern. Each box is 4×4 cells (16 cells per box). There are 48 total units (16 + 16 + 16), each requiring all 16 symbols exactly once.
The symbol set is typically the digits 1 through 9 followed by the letters A through G. Some variants use 0 through F (hexadecimal notation), or all letters. The choice of symbols is cosmetic — the logic is identical regardless.
How Difficulty Scales
| Feature | 9×9 Sudoku | 16×16 Sudoku |
|---|---|---|
| Total cells | 81 | 256 |
| Symbols per unit | 9 | 16 |
| Total units | 27 | 48 |
| Peers per cell | 20 | 39 |
| Initial candidates per cell | up to 9 | up to 16 |
Strategy for 16×16
All standard techniques apply: scanning, Naked Singles, Hidden Singles, Locked Candidates, Pairs. The same logic, just with 16 symbols instead of 9. The key adjustments:
- Pencil marks are mandatory. No one holds 16 candidates per cell in their head. Use digital tools with auto-candidate fill if available.
- Start with the most constrained area. Find the row, column, or box with the most givens and work outward from there.
- Cross-hatch each symbol. Work through symbols 1–9 and A–G one at a time, placing any that can be confined to a single cell in each box.
First-Timer Tips
Your first 16×16 will take much longer than expected — and that is normal. The techniques are familiar, but visually tracking 16 symbols across a large grid is cognitively demanding. Take breaks, work in sections, and do not rush the candidate-filling phase. The investment pays off: once you have completed a 16×16, standard Hard and Expert 9×9 puzzles will feel noticeably more manageable.
