The Rules

Standard Sudoku rules apply: fill every row, column, and 3×3 box with the digits 1–9, each appearing exactly once.

Mini Sudoku uses smaller grids: the popular 4×4 version uses digits 1–4 in four 2×2 boxes, and the 6×6 version uses digits 1–6 in six 2×3 boxes. The rules are identical to standard 9×9 Sudoku but scaled down. Mini Sudoku is ideal for introducing children to Sudoku logic, for quick puzzle sessions, or as a warm-up before tackling larger grids.

Common Questions

What is Mini Sudoku?

Mini Sudoku is a compact 4×4 variant of classic Sudoku. The grid uses only the digits 1–4, and every row, column, and 2×2 box must contain each digit exactly once. It follows all the same logic as standard Sudoku but at a fraction of the scale.

How is Mini Sudoku different from regular Sudoku?

Mini Sudoku uses a 4×4 grid with digits 1–4 instead of a 9×9 grid with digits 1–9. There are 4 rows, 4 columns, and 4 boxes (each 2×2). Solving techniques are identical but the puzzles resolve much faster — typical solve times are under 5 minutes even for beginners.

Is Mini Sudoku good for beginners?

Excellent for beginners. Mini Sudoku teaches the core Sudoku logic — elimination, uniqueness, scanning — in a format that's quick to complete and easy to check. It builds the mental habits needed for larger grids without the time commitment.

Can all standard Sudoku techniques apply to Mini Sudoku?

Yes, but only the simplest techniques are needed for most Mini puzzles: naked singles and hidden singles. More advanced techniques like naked pairs or X-Wings exist theoretically but rarely appear in 4×4 grids. Expert Mini puzzles can require hidden pairs.

Is Mini Sudoku just for children?

Not at all. Mini Sudoku is used by puzzle designers, schools, speed-solving enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a quick but satisfying logic puzzle. Expert Mini Sudoku puzzles with minimal given digits can challenge experienced solvers despite the small grid size.

How long does Mini Sudoku take to solve?

Easy puzzles take 1–3 minutes. Medium puzzles take 3–6 minutes. Hard and expert puzzles can take 5–12 minutes even for experienced solvers. Mini Sudoku is ideal when you want a complete puzzle experience in a short time.
