  • Use a pencil; you'll be erasing candidates as you progress.
  • Consider printing the solution key separately for reference.
  • Select "Background graphics" in print settings for sharp borders.
  • Print at 100% scale - Do not scale to fit.

How to Approach Hard Puzzles on Paper

Step 1 - Maintain full candidate grids
Hard puzzles require writing candidates in every empty cell from the start. After each placement, immediately update affected candidates. Keeping the grid accurate is more important than speed - An error here cascades through the whole solve.
Step 2 - Apply naked pairs/triples
When two cells in a unit contain only the same two candidates, those digits are locked in those cells. Eliminate them from all other candidates in the unit. The same logic applies to three cells sharing exactly three candidates (naked triple).
Tip - Box-line reduction
If a candidate digit in a row or column only appears inside one 3×3 box, it cannot appear elsewhere in that box. Eliminate it from other rows/columns within that box. This "box-line reduction" (the reverse of pointing pairs) frequently unlocks hard grids.
